Where to Get Help for an Addiction to Gambling

Thanks to the Internet, there are more opportunities than ever for people with issues to gamble. Online casinos, gambling rings, and other sites put temptation in front of the addict twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Like any other addiction, gambling starts with the addict. Many will try to place the blame on others, but they are wrong. Gambling addiction is defined as a person's inability to restrain themselves and/or deal with the consequences of their actions. However, there are successful treatments for gambling addiction; one just has to know where to look.

Gamblers Anonymous is the most well known program. Similar in structure to Alcoholics Anonymous, it is a twelve-step program and completely free of charge. The program teaches the addict to place their faith in a higher power, and with that help, they are able to beat their addiction in a safe and healthy way.

For those that cannot abide by a twelve-step program such as Gamblers Anonymous there are centers that remove the addict from the temptation. There, different methods are offered, which will allow the addict to see that they do indeed have a problem. Treatment centers typically offer a less-conventional method of treatment.

Withdrawal is the last main method of gambling addiction treatment. It can be done by the addict, by the act of withdrawing oneself from temptation. Going this route is very difficult; most addicts cannot go "cold turkey". However, this can often be the last resort.

Gambling addiction is just as dangerous as any other addiction- it must be taken seriously. It can cause severe consequences, some of which can never be cured. If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, you should surround them with the support necessary to overcome it. Try to associate with those that know how to stay away from gambling, and who can help you cope.
